One of the most well known cities in the United States, Chicago prides itself on finding a better way to do things~Wfrom strengthening public education to inventing Cracker Jacks, lowering crime to building the first skyscraper. In the same spirit, this year they've begun migrating their IT systems to Red Hat Enterprise Linux to improve performance and save costs.
When Juan Quesada's company, a leading home builder, began considering Linux in 2001, he turned to Red Hat for instructor-led training. Early the following year Juan became a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and is now the Linux "go to guy." "Experience is important," Juan notes, "but the RHCE proved to my company that I had the knowledge needed to carry out the Linux deployment with confidence and within time constraints."
When regulations mandated that Indian banks be fully computerized by December 2004, Central Bank of India knew they must find a solution optimized for scalability and focused on ease of support and maintenance. After some testing, Linux was clearly the best choice, with Red Hat as the partner. CBI has now implemented the Red Hat solution across 1,115 branches, with 1,770 additional branches planning to deploy Linux in 2004.

For the City of Bloomington, Indiana (pop 70,000), a declining budget offered a big opportunity. Their aging Unix infrastructure was experiencing significant performance problems along with increasing maintenance costs. When budget cuts were delivered, they had to find another solution. After migrating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Vanderbilt reports lower TCO in three areas: hardware acquisition, software licensing, and system administration.

When Pottawattamie County migrated mission-critical tasks from Microsoft Windows to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, they saw increased reliability and control at a significantly lower cost. "From a technical standpoint, we've found that Red Hat Enteprise Linux and other open source solutions could almost always meet the business needs and performance of proprietary alternatives," said Thomas Broniecki, Director of IT.

Now Fiat dealers have instant access to real-time CRM, dealer, and vehicle information, creating a streamlined buying process while lowering the cost of each sale. Fiat Link will be in use across 5,800 retailers in 17 countries by 2005.

The Chronicle Herald is the biggest independently-owned newspaper in Canada and boasts a daily readership of 333,000. As a thoroughly automated newspaper operation, The Chronicle Herald requires a highly available server and operating system to keep operations moving 24x7. They recently migrated from a Sun Enterprise 3000 environment to IBM eServer BladeCenter with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, a decision that saves CA$14,000 (US$10,500) over three years in maintenance costs alone. Additionally, The Chronicle Herald uses Samba and Sendmail for file system and e-mail software rather than Microsoft® Windows NT® and Microsoft Exchange, creating a savings of CA$25,000 (US$18,800).
